seems i was mistaken here - CentOS clients do indeed check in but one of
the test clients is on a network where this fails. So i wonder what ports
not being opened could be causing this as 80, 443 and 5222 are open from the
client to the server and a rhn_check works fine.

Any clue where to debug this further?
