Doesn't make any difference, unfortunately.

My symptoms are also somewhat different, the bug says "hangs on the 
SeaBIOS screen" whereas for me it hangs without a screen of any kind.

That report did point me to the "-monitor stdio" option, using which I 
was at least able to see that the VM is stuck in a reboot loop: every 5 
seconds or so CS:EIP change to 0xf000:0xfff0 which AFAIK means that the 
system was reset.

I also tried with "x-vga=on", but that made no difference either.
