IIRC Ubuntu 10.4 is too old to run libguestfs because you need
virtio-serial support in both qemu and the kernel, and one or both are
lacking.

Also, is there a reason to try building such an ancient unsupported
version of libguestfs?  Try the newest versions of libguestfs &
febootstrap.  They are much easier to build, as well as having lots of
new features.
